Whiskey Barrel Furniture

15 Nov

I was browsing through a consignment shop the other day and found an interesting chair made out of whiskey barrels. I had never seen anything like it, so I was extremely excited to uncover this gem. Apparently, this type of furniture was very popular back in the seventies.

Why?

Last Monday, at work, my boss showed this TED talk from Simon Sinek.

This has changed the way I will communicate, and I hope it makes you think about your why.

The Obligatory First Blog A.K.A. Getting to Know Me

1 Aug

To start off, my name is Meredith Campbell, and I recently graduated from the University of Indianapolis with a B.F.A. in Visual Communication Design and a B.S. in Experience Design (concentration in management).

If you are anything like me, two things might be going through your mind right now.

1) That is a mouth full.
2) What does it mean?

I’ll address number two while you contemplate how many times I’ve gone through this spiel. The easier of the two degrees, Visual Communication Design, is a fancy word for graphic design. Since that is pretty easily understood, I will move on to the more complicated explanation of Experience Design. If I were feeling sarcastic today, I would tell you that it is exactly what it sounds like which is designing experiences. However, since that never seems to help, I will instead say that it is an interdisciplinary field, which brings together the areas of research and development, design, and management. With these fields working together, an experience designer develops, designs, and manages an event, exhibition, or any other type of program. Of course, one person usually does not do this all alone, but is apart of a larger team.

While it may seem like a jumbled mess, it really is more interconnected than you might imagine. However, I will not bore you with any further explanation at this time.

Instead, I will simply say that I love design in all its forms. I have been drawing and painting fairly consistently since I was ten years old when my dad enrolled me in Saturday art classes at the June Kelly Art Studio. Since then, I have continued my artistic pursuits by picking up my previously mentioned degrees of Visual Communication Design and Experience Design. Outside of the classroom, my creative endeavors include photography, marveling at architecture, catching theater or dance productions, and reading up on whatever topic currently interests me.

Most likely, my blog will be a mashup of all these creative fields. If you are like me and love to soak up tidbits of knowledge, please follow and share your thoughts with me.
